EXORCISE THE DEMON - MARIJUANA FOR MORNING SICKNESS?

"While marijuana might be potentially risky for the fetus. The risks of untreated HG (severe morning sickness)  might be even more harmful. I did obstetrics for twenty five years, on a scale from 1 to 10 in terms of severity, HG is off the charts…and marijuana would help tremendously." - Dr. Anzalone

KEY ISSUES - MARIJUANA AND MORNING SICKNESS

  • Medical marijuana is not recommended for normal cases of morning sickness.

  • In cases severe cases, where morning sickness threatens both the mother and baby, intervention is recommended and medical marijuana might well be the best remedy available.

  • Scientific evidence about marijuana and pregnancy is scant and negative, meaning that the aim of the researchers (and their backers) is to find something wrong with it.

  • American women prefer marijuana to treat morning sickness because it works and they think it is a green, organic solution that is good for them.

  • Testimonial and anecdotal evidence is abundant and generally is very positive..

  • Some Medical Doctors are becoming aware of the possible benefits of marijuana in morning sickness.

  • In pregnancy one should avoid drugs of all kinds, if possible, and this would include marijuana.

  • In the case of serious morning sickness, where the baby will probably suffer, cannabinoids, THC and CBD appear generally much safer prescribed morning sickness drugs.

  • Experienced professional, preferably with an MD with experience in cannabis based medicines is always recommended to treat any disorder..

  • The best way to assure the purity of cannabis - without pesticides and toxins, is to grow your own.

  • Medical studies, particularly in this area of pregnancy are particularly poorly done and don't address the key issues, nor do they reflect an understanding of cannabis based medicines.

  • Microdosing - small amounts might afford profound relief of symptoms something that is seldom considered by both patient and doctor.

  • Negative opinions are generally based on ignorance, speculation and hearsay.

THE DEBATE - IS IT SAFE?

It is surprisingly common to find pregnant women smoking pot, but is it really safe?  Of course these ladies perceive marijuana to be a completely safe herbal drug, but are they kidding themselves?  What scientific research is out there that proves that marijuana is actually safe for babies, or if it has some negative effects, is it less dangerous that other medications that are prescribed to treat morning sickness?

When most people talk about marijuana, they talk about the kind with THC, the kind that get's you stoned.  But in reality, marijuana is not one thing.  There are many kinds and many forms, and not all of them get you stoned, but many are highly medicinal.

Raw marijuana, for example, it cannot get you high, because without heating it - the psychoactive component THC is inactive.  How many pregnant women have tried juicing marijuana and how many research papers are out there on the topic?  The major ingredients of juiced cannabis are THCA and CBDA along with some essential oils (terpenes), which show great efficacy in tummy upsets as reported by consumers.

Then there are strains high in CBD without and THC to speak of that could be efficacious.  There is marijuana with THC and CBD, which is an entirely different proposition to regular marijuana as well.  And there is more, there is day weed and night weed.   So when people talk about marijuana as one thing, they are grossly over simplifying the situation.  Moving forward, in this article, we'll go with the flow and refer to marijuana as the kind with mostly THC in it, the most common kind that is found on the street and in the dispensary.

WHY WE KNOW MARIJUANA IS NOT VERY TOXIC TO HUMANS

When considering the toxicity of any substance or drug, one first refers to what is called the LD50, which is a measure of toxicity, the amount of a substance it takes to kill 50% of a population.  Usually rats, mice or rabbits are used for this purpose in experiments and there are also estimates for humans as well.  Marijuana's ingredients have so low (toxicity) of a LD50, that it is virtually impossible to take enough to kill a person, you need to smoke something like 10,000 joints.  As Willie Nelson said, the only way it can kill you is if a bail falls on you, from a high height nonetheless.

"I tried lots of remedies for morning sickness and had a lot of success using peppermints, but there's one morning sickness remedy that I admit I was shocked to hear existed; Marijuana."

Back in the day, women commonly smoked cigarettes and drank booze when pregnant, and there were issues, but moderate consumption was not seen (in the statistics) to result in mass birth defects and issues.   It would seem, in comparison to this kind of past behavior, smoking a joint of a substance that of lesser toxicity compared to booze and cigrettes,  for morning sickness should be a walk in the park in comparison.   Is this the really?  What does the science say?

The problem with some of the research reports is that they are funded by organizations that want to find problems with marijuana consumption.  So unfortunately, spinning the data to achieve funding is a real problem.  Some studies conclude that marijuana consumption while pregnant causes stillbirth, however, as we go through the data, this conclusion appears to be very weak.

For example, one study concluded that in marijuana users, the decrease in birth weight was 1/4 pound.  That would seem to be an issue, but in negative studies, they choose neighborhoods where people smoke and also tend to consume hard drugs like crack and worse.  So you're not measuring marijuana vs stillbirth and other issues, but marijuana plus hard drugs, which obviously negates the whole study.

"By the end of my pregnancy and battle with HG, I had lost 21 pounds total. The day after the delivery was the first day I felt some relief from the nausea and vomiting. And although it took a while to get my appetite back, it was a wonderful day where everything didn't make me feel ill."

MARIJUANA WAS PRESCRIBED FOR WOMEN'S ISSUES FOR 100 YEARS - IN THE UNITED STATES

You've been had.  In the past, marijuana was prescribed and legal in the US for a long time by doctors.  The Federal diatribe against marijuana has always been baseless in fact.

Between 1850 and 1937, marijuana was widely used in American medical practice for a wide range of ailments. In 1851, Marijuana was admitted as a recognized medicine in the 3rd edition of the U.S. Pharmacopoeia under the name of Extractum Cannabis or Extract of Hemp and listed until 1942.

In 1890 Sir J. Russell Reynolds, a neurologist and physician was the personal physician of Queen Victoria the monarch of the United Kingdom. Sir Russell Reynolds, prescribed a cannabis tincture for the menstrual cramps the Queen was suffering from.

Reynolds wrote In an issue of The Lancet, which is one of the world's best known, oldest, and most respected weekly general medical journals; "When pure and administered carefully, (cannabis) is one of the most valuable medicines we possess."

"Extract of hemp is a powerful sleep-producing drug, causing exhilaration, intoxication, delirious hallucinations, and, in its subsequent action, drowsiness and stupor, with little effect upon the circulation. It is asserted also to act as a decided aphrodisiac, to increase the appetite, and occasionally to induce the cataleptic state. In morbid states of the system, it has been found to cause sleep, to allay spasm, to compose nervous disquietude, and to relieve pain."

"In these respects it resembles opium; but it differs from that narcotic in not diminishing the appetite, checking the secretions, or constipating the bowels. It is much less certain in its effects, but may sometimes be preferably employed, when opium is contraindicated by its nauseating or constipating effects, or its disposition to produce headache, and to check the bronchial secretion."

"The complaints in which it has been specially recommended are neuralgia, gout, rheumatism, tetanus, hydrophobia, epidemic cholera, convulsions, chorea, hysteria, mental depression, delirium tremens, insanity, and uterine hemorrhage." - - US Pharmacopoeia - hidden in plain view.

MMJDoctorOnline Notes:  Purchasing medical marijuana in California still requires a doctor's recommendation.  The process of getting a Marijuana ID Card or doctor's recommendation is easy and can be completed here online.  The process takes only a few minutes and patients don't have to pay until they are approved.   Your Cannabis ID can be used anywhere in the State of California, at dispensaries, delivery services, cooperatives, compassion clubs and at other points of access.  California Recommendations are also accepted at some locations in Nevada as well.

MOTHER'S AND OTHERS - TESTIMONIALS - OPINIONS ON MARIJUANA AND MORNING SICKNESS

Kimber Demas When did they do a study that proves weed hurts babies? An why is a lot of people saying that the women should just suck it up?

Stephanie Alvarado Aww the ignorance is so cute:) I like seeing the stupid ppl come out , it's a wake up call that the world truly is filled with idiots.

Antonio Martin There are responsibilities when deciding to have a baby...  Morning Sickness is one them...If you can't handle morning sickness, how in the hell are you going to handle changing dirty diapers and cleaning up milk vomit...

"hyperemesis gravidarum HG is an overlooked pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting, and is the leading cause of hospitalization." - Hyperemesis Education & Research (HER) Foundation

ToddandMarlana Fucile All you women need to suck it up and deal with being sick!!! I'm pregnant with baby 6 right now, and I never took anything for my "sickness" get over it!

Yani Gbay Yojaira Lopez Pelayo so my question is... and it may be a dumb one, but what if the mom has a bad trip? or the mom is fine but the baby does? is that possible?

Ciara Arps-Brumaghin But yet they never tell you the " serious side effects it can cause the fetus." Why? Cause the news is a load of crap. Some of yall need to do more research.

Jamie Varela So let's raise babies addicted to pot.... WTF is wrong with this world. Then when their children have learning disabilities, they will blame everyone except for themselves.

"I could not stop heaving long enough to take a hit from the pipe, so he took a hit and blew it into my face, vomiting up stomach acid."

Carlos Ernesto I had a roommate, she smoked during her pregnancy, her child is as smart as any other kid her age.

Danny Rhudy Jr. That awkward moment when you realize everything you've ever been told about cannabis was a lie.

Michelle Angelica Tamburro What I don't understand is how doctors want to give you prescriptions drugs for morning sickness that are not even approved by the FDA or any research proving they are safe for pregnant women.

Shelbee Rydawne To those who are saying "suck it up and just deal with the pains of pregnancy" blah blah blah. I'm guessing most of you got the epidural, when you could've just "sucked it up and dealt with the pain."

Amanda Lane-Greenwood I call bs there's no study ever showing that marijuana causes any birth defects it's been proven! I was told many years ago by my doctor that he'd rather me smoke pot while pregnant than cigs . If they haven't found anything wrong yet they won't! Let's focus on the doctor's like my sister in-law had that gave her methadone while she was pregnant and my nephew came out addicted! It's big pharma telling everyone this!

Austin Ionetz I'm an advocate for federal legalization but this is absurd. ANY smoke is bad for an unborn child still inside the womb and no child should be unnecessarily subjected to a drug that will cause early developmental issues. Stupid!

Mando Garcia They should do a study if it is bad for the baby. I know many of you say smoking is smoking, but it is way different for cigarettes. You can't get lung cancer from it and it doesn't kill brain cells. See if its as bad as people think it is.

Cesar IMarquez My baby mama smoked marijuana constantly with one of my kids, she's now 6 and better than ever.

Angela Robinson Nope. Literally no negative consequences when using only cannabis . Their "studies" are scare tactics because they know it's healthy and helpful and takes away from the pharmaceutical companies that hand out nasty drugs like Zofran. Please do not listen to mainstream medicine when educating yourself on cannabis use.

Trianna Morales those who are saying are ignorant and stupid for smoking obviously don't do research and just get their facts from the news...come on get out there and get educated.

Jupiter Bree I did my own research in 2008 to combat my morning sickness, and later found the zofran they prescribed at the emergency room, those 4 pills I took ONCE still caused a heart murmur with my daughter. Dcfs harassed me but my daughter didn't even test pos...

TeeTee Sisk   I don't care what you do with your body, but come on for a hell of a lot of years we never needed weed to cure morning sickness act like a woman and Carry your baby and keep it safe baby first.

Amber Lee If we can have a glass of wine safely.. we should be able to smoke SAFELY.  Stop spreading lies and misinformation. Do your own research.

Robin Rathgeb I bet if they told their Doctor what their doing, they would stop treating them for their pregnancy, as to not become liable for their STUPIDITY!!

Valerie Herlihy Didn't say what affects. I smoked with my first daughter because I was really sick a lot. One joint a day. So I might hold food down. This was back in 87. The hospital found it in her urine when she was born. She is 28 and doesn't have anything wrong with her. Pot is much stronger now so maybe that makes a difference.

Ambyr Leigh I used every day through my first trimester. Was the only way to get a little food in and not throw up. Still ended up losing 10 pounds and it would have been less without the medicine. My child is very advanced for her age. Plus, if any women are breast feeding...

Michelle Marquez I hope they do more studies on this, it can potentially be a very good thing....but in reality this is probably safer than all the vaccines that get pumped into these small bodies.

Marisabel Fulton That's how women become more weak and weak, is so stupid millions of millions women have morning sickness and nobody died from it everything is an excuse for to use...a dependence just let the nature to its curse and that's it

Editor's note:  Mari (above) has no clue.  Morning sickness can be life and death.  Mothers die in childbirth from weakness in pregnancy, of which, severe morning sickness is a major cause.  Also, in these cases, the infant toooften suffers irreparable harm or is stillborn.  In other cases, the baby is aborted by a body that is too ill to complete the term.

Crystal M Bird My mom, back in the 70's smoked the whole pregnancy with me. I was a straight a honor roll student, by high school was also taking college credit classes, was in the army at 17. First in my family EVER to earn an associate degree majoring in two scien...

Lisa Marie Then they wonder why babies are born with defect and or down syndrome!!!! Sad..very sad!!! Id rather deal with morning sickness. Its worth it..but then I love my kids.

Justin Thrash Garcia This has been tested. Small doses of cannabis, like the one needed to cure morning sickness are small and will cause no ill effect whatsoever. Also, it should be vaporized, not smoked. This has been tested. Don't play yourself. Do some research!

Ashlee Guzman Honestly has no effect on the child these comments are just pathetic...read the damn story of the 6 women in Jamaica their kids actually came out healthier. I know people will comment and bash me, but that's ok we all have a right to speak our minds.

Susan Beesley That's a little bit nuts. An unborn child doesn't need to be on any kind of drug! My morning sickness passed and I had beautiful healthy children. I didn't drink either. I wanted my boys to have every chance.

Angela Elizabeth Jones Does no one remember the children of Thalidomide? Seriously, at least until more studies are done on it, please refrain from smoking pot while pregnant. If cigarettes are bad, I don't see how pot might be good. But then again, I don't smoke. It is gross.

Brittany Gonzales Okay, first of all marijuana is not bad for pregnancy, I did it for the first 3 months of my pregnancy and my doctor said he's Pretty smart for his age and he has nothing wrong with him one bit and I know a bunch of other people that have done for the whole pregnancy and they said that their kids are normal and they are all smart marijuana makes you focused and calm so....

Cinthia Sanchez There is no actual proof to which they might actually pinpoint that weed is the cause for being born with OR having the risk of them coming out with a deficiency. All are assumptions due to, other substances such as regular prescribed medicine or seco...

Meg Pepitone I find it funny how all these anti pot articles come out after the fact it's been legalized. Stop trying to scare the old and ignorant please.

Nikki Fabela My mom smoked the whole time she was pregnant with me. Even had permission from her doctor. She could not hold anything down without it. I'm perfectly fine. I was 8lbs. I'm 30 now.

Kelly Burton Great idea. Smoke it to help morning sickness while making your baby high and putting it at danger. Oh, and if your smoking when the baby's born - hello to a drug addicted baby.

Editor's note: Kelly is a reefer madness writer.

Mariana L Boyle Cannabis is not harmful to any human, at any age. Unless you have asthma, then you should try edibles or tincture. Cannabis is less harmful than any narcotic or anti nausea regularly prescribed during pregnancy. All the anti cannabis comments are straight up wrong. And ignorant! Lol Grow up biased idiots.

Allan Scott Christopher Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've yet to see or hear of any studies involving marijuana's effect on the fetus. That being said keeping it natural as in no crutches is probably the safest thing for your child.

Nichole Lynn O'Brien Adults that wanna smoke weed, fine. Smoking weed while pregnant, is literally worse than smoking cigarettes. Not something I would ever do. Also, every prenatal check up, you pee in a cup and they drug test you. If they find any drug, except CPS at your delivery. No joke.

Melanie Miranda Well big pharma must be scared to pay the media to make this.   I'm not saying smoking is okay while smoking, but I truly believe tinctures , low doses and CBD is very good while pregnant . Much better then pills , that is a FACT.

Gracie Rodriguez-Hall Um probably not a good idea, it isn't that serious. That's what lemon and ginger is for Hello! Don't be a big baby and straight dumb.

Mag Mel OH NO, All those babies will be born laid back How come all these news outlets never seem to mention anything about alcohol poisoning our babies, youth and adults and how alcohol causes more problems for people because they surely can't drive while d...

Anna Marroquin What the Hell before. You would eat crackers. That would help fire the morning sickness. Now they want to smoke pot shows how much they care for Their Baby

Debi Aguilar When babies start being born with deformities and disabilities, then those children are born and left abandoned to the state or aborted what a disgrace!.....we have generations growing with the intellect of a pea!!

Ember Fantasia Well with my situation i was in the hospital because i could not keep anything down so my dr said try it it may work since nothing else does he does not recommend it before 16 weeks but it saved my life and my childs i lost 45 pounds in my first trimester and i struggling to put it back on

Hawaii Journal of Medicine & Public Health found that Hawaii women who reported severe nausea during pregnancy were significantly more likely to report use of marijuana during pregnancy than those who did not report severe nausea.

HEALTH Morning Sickness: Is Marijuana The Cure?

Despite ACOG’s recommendation that pregnant women should not use marijuana, many women have reported that cannabis helps them manage severe bouts of morning sickness.

Trinity Dogood, for example, said that the only way for her to get through the intense vomiting and nausea resulting from her Hyperemesis Gravidarum (HG)—a complication in which pregnant women experience unrelenting “nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and electrolyte disturbance”—was to smoke cannabis.

“I could not stop heaving long enough to take a hit from the pipe, so took a hit and blew it into my face,” Dogood told The Daily Beast.

Medical Marijuana For Morning Sickness? Some Doctors Think It'll Help Pregnant Women Relieve Severe Nausea

*On its own, marijuana uses remains heavily debated: The Daily Beast cited that 23 states so far have "recognized marijuana for its medical benefit" and allow it to be legally prescribed, while other states are only recently considering the idea of legalization. But even in states where it's legal, The Daily Beast has found that many physicians still refuse to sign off on medical licenses for pregnant women. This is to be expected when national guidelines typically warn against marijuana use during pregnancy.

*The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) released new recommendations inspired by the increased prevalence of marijuana. To ACOG, women who are pregnant or contemplating pregnancy should avoid marijuana based on the findings "endocannabinoids play key roles in normal fetal brain development." Endocannabinoids are receptors that the main ingredient of marijuana, THC, clings on to. And there are some studies that find marijuana use during pregnancy may triple the risk of prematurity and stillbirth.

*For Trinity Dogood, medical marijuana was the only thing that offered her relief from hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) — "an overlooked pregnancy disease marked by rapid weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration due to unrelenting nausea and/or vomiting," the Hyperemesis Education & Research (HER) Foundation reported. It's also reportedly the leading cause for hospitalization in early pregnancy.

*Dogood told The Daily Beast that her doctor hadn't prescribed much else for her symptoms than making sure she got her recommended dose of vitamin D. When she'd exhausted several natural remedies for otherwise relief, including essential oils, her boyfriend produced marijuana for the two of them to smoke. She could not stop heaving long enough to take a hit from the pipe, so he took a hit and blew it into my face," Dogood said soon after that she stopped "vomiting up stomach acid."

*Most women—up to 90 percent by some reckoning—experience some nausea or vomiting during pregnancy. Up to two percent of them suffer from the life-threatening condition hyperemesis gravidarum, which is super morning sickness.

*One of the oldest medical uses of cannabis was obstetric, both to ease delivery and to treat the nausea leading up to it. For obvious ethical issues, there have been no modern clinical tests in this area. However, there is a survey from 2005 that takes a look into this topic.

*Seventy-nine Canadian cannabis users discussed their pregnancy with researchers. Fifty-one of them admitted to using cannabis while pregnant. Thirty-three used it recreationally (split almost equally between occasional and frequent users), while 36 said they did so to take the edge off morning sickness. (Obviously, there was overlap between the two groups.) Of those who used cannabis medicinally, 92 percent rated it as “effective” or “extremely effective.”

An Unlikely Medication For Morning Sickness: Marijuana
