HOW MARIJUANA CAN REALLY IMPROVE WORKOUTS
420 Games - Breaking the Stereo-types of Cannnabis Users
It had to happen in San Francisco first. The world's first cannabis gym startup. Soon, people that smoke pot can workout at the same time. Take a toke of some energising weed, like Durban Poison. The THCV will give you a bit of the good old "eye of the tiger". The hit your sets, maybe have a couple of puffs after a heavy set of squats. Then wind down with an Indica loaded with terpenes and some CBD, to nip inflammation at the bud (pun intended). Then hit the steam room and rehydrate with a smoothie with a pinch of mineral rich sea salt to top off the electrolytes. Heaven forbid having a massage on top of all. You might need to hit the sack right there and then.
"I tried exercise but found I was allergic to it - my skin flushed, my heart raced, I got sweaty, short of breath. Very very dangerous."
If the pot-gym concept takes off, it will surely dampen the urban myth that pot smoking makes everyone lazy and somewhat useless. The "inventor" of the pot gym idea is a middle aged athlete, Jim McAlpine, a super fit 46 year old. Contrary to the image of the big scruffy goofy pot smoker, Jim looks forward to smashing that stereotype, starting with his own physique, the buff surfer, skier type who kick's ass and smokes a bit of weed while he's ramping up the muscles.
McAlpine will offer physical assessments and offer advice on how to use cannabis productively in the exercise and recovery phases. The plan is to have a dispensary onsite, including edibles high in protein with plenty of mg of cannabinoids, like THC, CBD and possibly others. Then there are special formulations for post-workout. His partner, former NFL running back Ricky Williams plan to add locations in Los Angeles, San Jose, Seattle, Denver, and Portland.
“If you use it right, cannabis takes the things you love and let's you love them more. With fitness that can help get you into the zone, into tiger mode.”
Certainly this isn't the first time sportsmen have combined weed with sports. Many strains of marijuana slow reaction time and impair motor skills, it's not necessary to smoke a lot of these types of weed before a workout. Certainly you want to be comfortable and know exactly what your capabilities before you start lifting really heavy free weights. You also want to be competent and have a program in place. There is no place for amateurs that come into the gym, smoke the wrong type, amount of weed and then do something really stupid, like trying to PR on the bench without a spotter, or some such..
"I drink while I work out. I call it Bacardio"
The right amount of cannabis helps people get in the zone, and make working out more interesting and fun, while providing relief of anxiety, fear, pain and muscle relaxation. There are a lot of former athletes that suffer tremendous joint pain and inflammation, that literally kills the fun from working out. A regime with perhaps a little Durban Poison (energising THCV) and some AC/DC (stacked with anti-inflammatory CBD) just might be the formula that allows these folks to work out without pain, and get their ass back into the game.
McAlpine says he’s seen the proof over and over again, in his own workouts and in his mates. Last year, for example, Jim McAlpine ate 90 milligram THC in a Kiva bar and promptly jumped into the frigid waters of San Francisco Bay. Swimming, he says is the best sport for his knees and laughs when he admits that the edible was the only way he survived the cold and insane mile and a half swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco.
“I was so eye of the tiger focusing on my stroke.” - McAlpine
While few athletes at the top level use marijuana as a performance enhancer, McAlpine, like many athletes, uses cannabis to help focus in practice.
“Think of the yin and the yang of the body and mind. We’re a body and mind training center. We’re going to get your body right and we’re going to get your mind right.” - McAlpine
McAlpine says that Power Plant Fitness memberships will cost around one hundred bucks, and will include a consultation with a medical marijuana doctor. This and in combination with other things he's doing, such as pioneering the 420 games startup, helps to break down the stigma against marijuana.
"I spend my time at the gym doing diddly squats"
There will be day to day assessment of each gym member, which determines individual tolerance, and optimal dosage for workout performance. The focus is on cross training techniques and customizing programs to the individual. While nothing is stopping anyone from eating an edible and working out, then vaping, say some CBD at the end. The point of the gym is to provide a full service, and optimize the whole routine and even the lifestyle. Also, a gym where most everyone is using cannabis makes it more of a comrade, brothers in arms thing, where everyone is a piece of the whole.
“I’d get home from practice and my body would be hurting and my mind would be racing, I’d use cannabis to chill and get some sleep.” - Williams - Miami Dolphins in 2002.
As much as pot can help the body recover after a workout, it helps the mind to endure repetitive training, which can grind some people down, year in and year out. McAlpine uses edibles in his fitness routine to get into the flow state, a place where motion is smooth, the mind is clear and the whole activity makes sense, has a purpose. When clarity of mind is achieved, things start to slow down, and the monkey ADD brain that plagues society today is, temporarily at least, dead..
“It’s when you’re in the zone really, [Cannabis] helps me focus my mind on the athletic activity.” - McAlpine
While the weed gym surely isn't for everyone, it might be especially beneficial to get a certain demographic to go to the gym. When weed and working out is associated with one another in the primitive brain, then the subconscious throws the idea into your head, hey, I feel like working out... let's go.
There are worse things to do with your life. Party on Dude
MMJDoctorOnline Notes: If you have inflammation, pain or other conditions that limit your ability to work out and live life in a reasonable fashion, until 2018 you'll need a licensed doctor's evaluation for medical marijuana. A California licenses physician's recommendation allows you to purchase, transport, and use cannabis based medicines in both Cali and Nevada.
This Telemedicine process can be completed online here, in a few minutes. Approval is same day and patients don't pay unless they're approved. Cannabis ID Cards, grow permits and renewals are also provided. Documents are used at dispensaries, cannabis clubs, cooperatives, delivery services and other providers of cannabis meds.
"I was just wondering how skinny I’d be if I had to pedal to keep the computer on?"
It’s a typical Wednesday evening. After a long run, Andrew*, who works in digital media in New York City, is following his standard post-run routine. Like most runners, he’ll quickly cool down, stretch, drink water, and maybe grab a post-workout snack. Unlike many runners, he’ll also smoke pot. The avid runner and cyclist, whose racing résumé includes the Umstead 100 Ultra, typically lights up immediately before his athletic activities and usually within an hour or two post-sweat session....Inflammation
Nate Diaz, the famous UFC fighter recently made major waves by vaping on Live TV. For the uninitiated, Nick and brother Nate Diaz are the perhaps the most notorious patrons of both Martial Arts and Cannabis Sports.
"If I'm going to train all day, when I get done, I'm gonna want to smoke,"
UFC veteran Nate Diaz and arch enemy / friend of superstar Conor McGregor got a slap on the wrist. The straightforward and non-bullshiting Diaz accepted a public warning by the USADA for his admitted use of CBD, a banned substance. CBD by the way, is a medicinal ingredient found in some forms of cannabis that is non-psychoactive.
Despite the popular lazy stoner stereotype that depicts cannabis users camping out on the couch to watch a marathon of their favorite show rather than run in one, it turns out that marijuana and exercise have a deeper relationship than many believe. If you have ever wondered why so many active surfers, skaters, snowboarders, and even body builders smoke marijuana, the answer is in the fact that getting stoned can be extremely conducive and supplemental to exercise. Pain
Four to six times a week, elite triathlete Clifford Drusinsky wakes up at 3 AM to train. But before he sets out, he opts not for a sports drink but for 20 milligrams of THC in a marijuana energy bar. By the time it kicks in, 30 minutes later, he's started an hour in the pool, a three-hour bike ride, or a 13-mile run. "Marijuana relaxes me and allows me to go into a controlled, meditational place," says Drusinsky. "When I get high, I train smarter and focus on form."
Marijuana and your workout... The People Speak
From my experience, I get completely zoned out and hit the jump rope like a monster! In weight lifting, I feel every cord stretching and ripping. I get a good workout without it as well, but I get super focused and completely zoned into my workout. I'd like to hear your opinions; pro or con, it doesn't matter. Flame or not, doesn't affect me.
As marijuana becomes more mainstream, with seven states preparing for legalization (hot on the heels of my home state of Washington, and also Colorado, Oregon, Alaska and Washington D.C.), an increasing number of athletes, including triathlete Clifford Drusinsky (a future podcast guest) and what seems to be nearly the entirety of the UFC, are now turning to a marijuana as a training aid for their running, swimming, cycling, lifting, fighting and more...
Cannabis isn’t thought of as the most stimulating substance in the world, but it may be time to reconsider the lazy stoner stereotype. As it turns out, cannabis and exercise have quite the involved relationship. The Leafly team did some research to find out just how much getting stoned and getting ripped have in common. Here’s what we found out:...
