HOW TO TAKE MEDICAL MARIJUANA - ORAL OR VAPOR
How much, what form, how to start, what about vapes and edibles, what ater they all about?
Anyone new to cannabis based medicines should not worry. Relax, there are no document cases of overdose. If you take a little care, youll be just fine.
To get started, there are only a few simple things to know. If you try a joint or vape, just take one small puff and see what happens. The same goes for edibles, take only 1/4 of the regular dose and then observe the effects.
People that consume medical marijuana really want to consider using both oral and inhalation routes of administration. Oral delivery provides long lasting medication that works all night long, while inhalation provides immediate relief. For example, a person with chronic pain, that comes and goes would benefit from a routing of edibles in the evening, that knock out the pain and assists in deep sleep.
"The better and more mature research suggests that new patients should start with a strain, oil or other type of MMJ with one part THC and three parts CBD. Start small and work up the dose. Increase dose in intervals of two weeks, because it takes time for your body to adapt. This is critical. Keep a diary and note where the dose is optimal. For those that are THC tolerant, a CBD:THC ration of 1:1 is suggested by Dr. Paul Hornby. Dr. Hornby has treated many hundreds of patients over the years.
During the day or night, if the pain hits hard, then delivery by Vape is an excellent way to go. With the Vape, you can take a strong dose and the effects wear off in an hour or so, which means overmedication is only a temporary issue for a short period of time. Edibles however, need to be managed more carefully, you need to know what the right dose, how much THC and how much CBD.
INHALATION DELIVERY METHODS FOR CANNABIS
The most abundant ingredient of most kinds of cannabis, THC is not psychoactive until it is burned. When heated to a temperature of about 350 deg F, the active ingredients THC and CBD lose a carboxyl group, . The inhaled cannabis vapor contains gaseous decarboxylated and bio-active, most predominantly;THC and CBD. The THC vapor is psychoactive, while CBD is not psychoactive at all.
When cannabis smoke or vapor in inhaled, the gases enter the lungs, where the cannabinoids and other components, such as terpenes, absorb into the blood. While smoking marijuana is NOT associated with lung issues, except in those who smoke extreme quantities. With that said, it is a good idea to use a good Vape, which removes most of the Tar.
TAR IS NO BIG DEAL - UNLESS YOU SMOKE A TON
The trick is to keep the temperature of combustion high enough to vaporize the cannabinoids, but low enough to stop the burning of the tar component.
"Quite a few people have reported clean lungs via x-ray, with no sign of being a smoker, after switching to vapor for a while. I've been vaping for years with no issues, after no longer being able to tolerate smoke anymore. If zero tar isn't obtainable with vapor, and that's a deal breaker for you, do what you gotta do. As for me, I'm perfectly happy with how my lungs have reacted to the presence of vapor and lack of smoke."- Mad Max
In actual fact, the bong is kind of a disaster, it does a bad job of filtering out toxic hydrocarbons and the water condenses some of the THC, making it the nearly the worst possible method of administration. With that said, they are highly conductive to social situations and the placebo effect is high, because the ritual of bong smoking is perceived as exotic, and any kind of positive stimulation enhances the experience of what have you.
"New patients should note that there are strains of cannabis that energise while others are sedatives. Other strains (high in CBD, and little THC) are highly medicinal and calming, if taken at bedtime leads to a better charge of the batteries come the next day ....according to much anecdotal information."
WHAT IS THE IDEAL VAPE TEMPERATURE?
Bear in mind that marijuana is used to treat asthma and cancer. Nonetheless, there are small amounts of naughty compounds in weed smoke that are undesirable. At higher ignition temperatures, many toxic and potentially carcinogenic compounds form. You want to avoid volatile hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene and naphthalene. Hydrocarbons in weed tend to form at temperatures above 392° F. Which means, if you keep the vaporizer temperature below this level, the amount of toxins these toxins are reduced.
"The response of different strains and their cannabinoids, terpenes and other ingredients is highly individual. THC can make some people dizzy and comatose at first, or the opposite. To find out what is best for you is trial and error. If the shoe fits, wear it. And the shoe might require some breaking in." - Johnny Rodriguez
What is the ideal setting? There is some debate, with some people going down to 300 ° F, but the science, we adhere to, and most agree, the best temperature is around 360-380 ° F, where the temperature is high enough to volatilize the cannabinoids and terpenes, but not too high to denature the ingredients into toxic gasses. This best temperature does not volatilize the tar as well. Controlled clinical studies suggest that 95% of the undesirable components of weed smoke is removed by Vaping, that is correctly.
Vaporizers are also about twice as efficient as smoking a joint. This means that your medical marijuana costs can be reduced by half or something like that, simply by using a good Vape.
Test results for efficiency and health rating for vape, joint and bong were:
Waterpipes remove quite a bit of THC and polar components, which are not necessarily hazardous, while non polar hydrocarbons - the toxic ones - are not removed effectively by a polar solvent like water. A skilled pipe user might be able to get the most out of his weed, but probably not in practice, for the vast majority, day in and day out.
"IN MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE: I use a MyrtleZap. As a recreational user and self-medicator (I use it to help me sleep/fall asleep as well as for relaxation) I know, for myself, vaporizing is FAR superior in efficiency VS pipe/water pipe combustion methods. When the same amount of herb lasts me months instead of weeks (yes, I'm a 1-2 bowl an evening person-sometimes more, sometimes less) ...and I'm still receiving the high or effects I'm seeking ,which are, to me, even greater in intensity over smoke.".
At the end of the day, it is either a vape vs old school joint/pipe. Old school is simple and you can get a whole herb experience from a joint or pipe, while Vaping will save you a lot of money, is more convenient for discrete consumption, and is a lot cheaper.
TYPES OF VAPES - LEARN THE SIMPLE BASICS TO CHOOSE
Vape vendors are quite annoying, in that they use a lot of fancy verbiage to describe, what is a very simple device, or it should be. Anything with "smart" options should be avoided like the plague. These devices are usually junk, we've never seen any smart device lives up to its name.
At the end of the day, you just want to heat up your herb to the proper, safe temperature and inhale your medicine, bonus if it looks good. You want the device to also be sturdy, long lasting and easy to use. So, if you see a Vape vendor that goes on and on about the features and this and that, we say, don't buy. Vaping should be a simple thing to do and a simple thing to communicate about.
What you want in a Vape is stainless steel and glass components, a robust battery and ignition coil. Do your homework and check out the internet forums on the Vape you wish to purchase.
Here is an example of an Oil Vape with the features we like:

DABS, WHAT IS THAT?
Dabs are a way to inhale concentrated extracts of cannabis from a hot device like a hot nail or spoon. Cannabis concentrate, wax, honey oil, are all used in dabbing. Dab rigs, are a larger, heavier version of a Vape, with the heating device being a nail.
Dab rigs are recommended for those with serious conditions only, requiring industrial duty strength, like extreme pain, cancer and other. On the recreational side, people use dabbing to get really stoned in a hurry. In California, Nevada and the majority of the US, dabbing cannabis is legal, but be careful on Federal lands, all cannabis related activity there is illegal.
"A setup like this is perfect for getting the smoothest, most flavorful dab. When it comes to flavor, I prefer quartz buckets known as bangers because they don’t interfere with the natural terpene profile of the saps and shatters that I dab. The deep bucket can handle large amounts of concentrate without a mess, and the clear aesthetic is much cleaner on artistic glass and heady rigs." - From Leafly (above)
ORAL DELIVERY - EDIBLES
Oral delivery any technique of administration via the pie hole; which includes tinctures (herbal alcohol extracts of cannabis), ingestible oils (CBD and THC), and infused food/drinks (brownies, candy, oils). Edibles enter the digestive tract mixed with saliva and then combine with various digestive acids, bile and enzymes before entering the bloodstream. Tinctures enter the blood directly and immediately via the membranes in the lower mouth and under the tongue.
Tinctures are a liquid cannabis extract used by consumers looking for dosage control and fast-acting effects without the health risks associated with smoking. Most commonly, alcohol is used as the solvent (any proof greater than 80 can be used effectively), but other fat-soluble liquids can be used as well, such as vinegar or glycerol.
Generally, three or four drops of the tincture are placed under the tongue, where it’s absorbed into the body versus swallowed and digested. When ingested, tinctures are immediately absorbed on an empty stomach, but require time to process through the liver, reducing dosage control.
"Into the future, at the tip of the spear, tinctures with an abundance of naturally occurring terpenes, with greatly varying medicinal properties coupled with lesser know cannabinoids are predicted to provide an even wider scope of medical efficacy and an improvement in effectiveness."
Ingestible cannabis oils are a happy middle ground, between edibles and concentrates: MMJ oils taken in capsule form or added to foods and beverages are easily swallowed / digested like any infused product, but they are generally more consistent in the quantity / quantity of active ingredients.
One popular concentrated cannabis oil is Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) which is now commonly used to treat skin and other forms of cancer. RSO is made by extracting the medicinal compounds of cannabis into an alcohol solvent and then evaporating off the alcohol, leaving behind a thick oily substance. Rick Simpson oil can be Vaped or made into E-Liquid and smoked as well.
Oils have longer onsets and tend to cause potent full-body, psychoactive effects.
A great variety of Infused food and drinks can be made simply by adding cannabis oils to butter, olive oil, Crisco or other fatty ingredient.. Adding tinctures to dishes is another option for dosing because the alcohol easily mixes and dose is easy to calculate and thus control.
Cannabis flowers can be added directly, but it is a good idea to grind them up. A coffee grinder is perfect for this purpose. Remember, you need to bake at 350 deg F before the cannabinoids are decarboxylated, which greatly enhances some of their biochemical properties. Alternately, cannabis flowers (bud) can be ground and then bake for half an hour.
"To decarbox, preheat the oven to 220 F / 105 C. Place the bud on parchment paper, in a flat baking pan. Bake for 30 minutes. If bud is wet, bake for another 15 or so minutes. To retain terpenes (recommended), use a pyrex pan with good fitting lid."
TOPICAL AND OTHER DELIVERY SYSTEMS
Topical delivery systems are highly underrated and underutilized as is raw cannabis juicing.
Large quantities of cannabinoids can be administered without psychoactivity. The effects of juiced cannabis and raw non-psychoactive extracts need to be studied, particularly in the case of Crohn's disease and other gastrointestinal disorders.
Topical cannabis administration typically utilizes a whole cannabis extract, in a thick oil that has been decarboxylated to activate the cannabinoids. Activated cannabinoids are easily absorbed through the skin and are applied directly to the area of injury and insult. Cannabinoids are little researched in the area of skin care, but theoretically, they might help repair the skin's organelles that produce collagen.
This "low hanging fruit" has yet to be exploited. Similarly, in sports medicine, few athletes outside the people in the know, the martial artists and a few football players take advantage of the benefits of cannabis creams and lotions to treat their high performing and abused muscles.
"Perez says the average puffs/min is 2.6. Their data was collected using 2 puffs/min average. They found that out of the sample, only about 15-20% of THC was recovered by the user. The rest was lost in sidestream smoke and pyrolysis. A simple calculation says that the 20-26% of THC will be recovered in the average session using a joint and the 2.6 puffs/min data." - Weed Alchemist
*Gieringer says 50% of THC was recovered using a smoking machine that mimicked human smoking habits. They do not go further into what they felt was the average human smoking speed in terms of puffs/min. I find Perez’s tests to be more conclusive as they used real humans to find the average puffs/min of a joint while Gieringer did not. I have a feeling Gieringer machine smoked the joint much faster than a normal human because he cites a 69% efficiency rate if the joint is taken all in one hit, so a 50% rate for a normal human smoker seems artificially high. Since Gieringer used a machine, there was also no butt left."
"Surprisingly, an unfiltered joint outperforms a bong or waterpipe by nearly 30% in terms of THC : Tar ratio (Perez-Reyes). Using NIDA marijuana cigarettes, a ratio of 1 : 13 was acquired. I might mention NIDA research marijuana is extremely low potency, about 2-4%. Using more potent sinsemilla could drastically increase this ratio for the better."
GONG THE BONG
- 1 Vape : 45-60% efficient
- 2 Joint : 20-30% efficient
- 3 Pipes: 15-35% efficient
- 4 Bongs :15-22% efficient
"Interestingly, a lot of THC is lost to the bong itself. 21.1% of the sample’s THC was lost in the bowl, 3.3% in the water, and 7.8% in the stem. Plant matter that fell into the water also accounted for 8%. Tar ratio, it performed 30% worse than an unfiltered marijuana cigarette at about 1 : 17! " - Gong the Bong
MMJDoctoronline Notes: To purchase marijuana of any kind, until 2018 a doctor's recommendation is required. A 420 evaluation, cannabis ID card application and growers permit can be acquired online. Our process takes only a few minutes to complete and your documents are normally approved the same day. Patients don't pay unless they have been approved. Documents can be used in California and most parts of Nevada, to purchase cannabis based medicine products from dispensaries, delivery services, cooperatives, cannabis clubs, and other access points.
Dabbing is evolving fast, and it seems like every other day there’s a new tool, technique, or technology. One day it’s nothing but titanium nails, torches, and BHO; the next it’s quartz bangers, e-nails, and rosin. Its rapid evolution can be a lot to keep up with, and if you’re like me, you probably switch up how you dab depending on what the situation calls for.
If you cook, then this article will turn you into an edibles chef.
