Marijuana is Medicine - So says the American Medical Association

Cannabis is Good Medicine

In the 1800’s, the Federal government required farmers to grow hemp by law, with notable growers and being none other than George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.

Until the 1930’s, medical Marijuana was widely prescribed in America by the medical establishment; until special interest groups motivated prohibition. Interestingly, the American Medical Association opposed Federal Government's  Marijuana Tax Act of 1937, and now, nearly a century later, chime in with substantial, positive recommendations.

Has America come full circle?   In the case of Medical Marijuana, history indeed appears to repeat itself, or, in the words of Mark Twain, rhyme

AMA Study - Marijuana is a viable medicine

This notable panel’s conclusion was that medical Marijuana is indeed a viable form of medicine and appears to be an effective treatment for a number of conditions and diseases.  Further, this medical panel recommends that quality research is required to establish definitively the efficacy of medicinal Marijuana.

Conditions studied

In this summary study, a total of 79 trials, including 6462 participants was appraised for the indications:

  • appetite stimulation in HIV/AIDS

In addition, there was evidence that CBD provided for an improvement in anxiety as assessed in a public speaking test.   Effects on psychosis and depression were non-conclusive, but warrant further study.

Finally the panel recommended that large, robust, random controlled studies are needed to confirm more precisely the effects of cannabinoid therapy.

MD Study Medical Marijuana efficacy supported by high quality evidence

In another study, “Medical Marijuana for Treatment of Chronic Pain and Other Medical and Psychiatric Problems”, even stronger conclusions toward the efficacy of medical Marijuana for neurological disorders were expressed.

In this clinical review of June, 2015, Dr.  Kevin P. Hill, MD found that medical Marijuana’s use for chronic pain, neuropathic pain, and spasticity due to multiple sclerosis is supported by high-quality evidence.

This study was not light-weight. The effectiveness of medical Marijuana was studied over six trials, with 325 patients examined chronic pain and 12 trials, with 1600 patients for multiple sclerosis.
