The Ozone all-round solution for Marijuana Growers - A Virtual Miracle Machine

"Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent that kills mold, bacteria, viruses, mites and other critters, and deodorizes too, making it the most practical and environmentally friendly remedy for marijuana cultivators."

Even though Ozone has been used to deodor, sanitize and disinfect for quite some time, it is only in the past twenty years that its use has become more than widespread, ozone has probably become the most desirable and effective technique on the market.

Ozone or O3 is naturally occurring and is created when ultraviolet light from the sun hits an O2 molecule producing monatomic O.  The monatomic oxygen temporarily bonds with an O2 molecule to produce O3.   In nature the air we breathe contains 10 to 100 parts per billion ozone and this is enough to naturally discourage the growth of many micro-organisms.  Overall the atmosphere contains about 600 ppb ozone with concentrations higher in the upper atmosphere where UV light is much more abundant.

"Nearly ALL five star hotels use Ozone to decontaminate, disinfect and deodorize their suites on a regular basis."

Higher concentration made by man, can be used to disinfect and kill.  Elevated Ozone levels are associated with smog, which exacerbates lung conditions.  Beware, however, because breathing ozone can cause respiratory issues in humans and care must be taken not to breathe in large amounts of this gas.  With that said, ozone is used as a therapy in amounts that kills microbes, but not human cells (or very few).

process of ozone creation

Regulatory agencies US-FDA, USDA, FSIS, FFDCA, ARTCA have approved ozone in the treatment, storage and processing of foods.

Pesticides, herbicides, bacteria, virus, mold, fungus, insects, many chemicals and organic smells.

Foods, herbs, water for cleaning and drinking, utensils, wash cloths, hands.

According to Wiki, possible symptoms of long-term pesticide exposure are; increased risk of cancer, neurological impairment (e.g. Parkinson's disease), developmental effects reproductive effects, organ damage, intrusion with human hormones.  Just three drops of commonly used pesticides EPN or a teaspoon of carbofuran can be fatal.

Ozone Sanitation System that can significantly reduce exposure to commonly used pesticides  Bacteria, mold, and other microorganisms are also simultaneously eliminated.

"I put this a Ozone Generator Air Purifier Cleaner 1 000 MG HR for the last year, and it kicks BUTT.I leave it in the main room that my grow room is located, and people often come in to hang out, never know right behind a door is some stinky flowering plants!"

A few pesticides are actually made more toxic by ozone.  To use ozone commercially, one must be trained.  If you're using bromine containing sprays or additives, you need to consult a chemist to find out if the particular substance you're dealing with will react in an undesirable way with ozone.

In 1982 the FDA declared ozone a GRAS treatment for bottled water.

In 1997 the FDA was presented with a study that affirms the history and safety of ozone use with foods.

Ozone can be used in several ways.

  • 4 hour duration - moderate levels once per week to curb the growth of microbes and pests.
  • 24 hour shock - moderate to high levels to kill pests, mites, fungus, molds, etc.
  • Ozonated water - to clean final product and neutralize pesticides and herbicides
  • Ozone high strength - deodorize skunk smell from air discharged from the facility.

Ozone has a short half life of about 45 minutes plus or minus depending on atmospheric / environmental conditions, so ozonated product or production areas will have safe levels of ozone only a few hours after heavy exposure.

Ozone (O3) is an unstable molecule composed of 3 oxygen atoms.

Ultraviolet light from the sun and lightning transforms some O2 into O3 (ozone).  Naturally occurring ozone levels in the atmosphere are about 1 part in a million.

Ozone machines work in the same way as nature does to create ozone. Oxygen is pushed through high voltage plates and is "electrified" where O2 molecules are pulled apart, and later recombine to produce O3.  Other systems where room air (which contains about 22% oxygen) is pushed through a machine with powerful ultraviolet lamps.  A portion of the high powered photons (UV light) hit and excite the O2 molecule to the point where the bond breaks and monatomic oxygen is produced.  Again the reaction for O3 is O + O2.

Ozone, (O3), or activated oxygen  contains three atoms of oxygen rather than the two atoms that we normally breathe.  One of the oxygens in Oxone is extremely reactive and bonds with aromatic (airborne) compounds rapidly.  Microorganisms have great difficulty dealing with monatomic oxygen that is given off as ozone breaks down.

Ozone is a very powerful sterilant which is used to destroy bacteria, viruses and odors, whether it be clothes on the line in the sun or an ozone machine used to deodorize a hotel suite.  Ozone is naturally occurring, the result of lightning strikes or strong rays from the sun.   The fresh, clean spring rain smell after a storm is created in part by higher levels of ozone created by nature.

"Ozone generators surpass carbon filters hands down imo. Run it inside your tent, the plant continues to grow and produce thc, there will be no significant loss of potency. They *CAN* remove a bit of the smell from the final product IF you are pumping way to much in there, and if you leave them on while harvesting/drying/curing."

ozone kills skunk smell.

Ozone can have a half life as low as 30 minutes.  Let's say that we have treated a greenhouse for 24 hours and the concentration has built up to 320 ppm.  After we turn off the O3 machine, in 30 minutes the concentration of O3 will go down to 160.  After 1 hour, its down to 80 ppm, 2 hours we're down to 40 ppm.  If we turn on a fan and open the windows, the concentration goes down much more rapidly.

With ventilation and natural decay, most facilities can be safely inhabited after a few hours.  Only a residual bleachy smell will remain, especially in fabrics.  The residual bleach smell of ozone can linger but these amounts are generally in therapeutic rather than harmful quantity.   People with respiratory conditions can simply wait a while until the bleachy smell and the O3 is gone.

The odor of molds will come back if the time and duration of ozone was correct.  Cannabis plant skunk odor will return as the plant metabolizes its nutrients into terpenes.   Ozone should be used in cannabis operations to kill pests, mold and disease.  An entirely different system can be used for deodorizing, and this process needs to be ongoing.

YES, PERFECTLY. Clothes, an apartment, top to bottom, rugs, everything can be completely sanitized in 8 hours using a good ozone machine, with proper technique.

No, not at all. The levels of ozone required to kill organisms and neutralize chemicals does not affect computers, electronics, fabrics or paintings.

A rule of thumb, 1.0 g ozone per hour per 100 sq. ft.  or 10 sq. m. for 12 hours to disinfect and demold a minor infested, slightly smelly apartment.  Double the dose - 2 grams per 100 sq. ft.  to demold and disinfect very moldy and grotty situations.

A starting point for a 1000 sq ft greenhouse (less than 10 ft ceiling) is to use a 20 g/hr UV ozone generator, (delivers 2 g per 100 sq.ft.), overnight once per week to keep pests and fungus from getting a start.  If you have an infestation, consider ozonating 24 or more hours.  For larger operations, scale up by using more machines.  Use fans to distribute the O3 evenly throughout the facility. Set fans on low and blow down, because ozone is heavy and concentrates at floor level (where the plants are).

There are a few websites out there that say that Ozone is dangerous and should not be used.  These naysayers aren't professional and are not aware of the US-EPA and Wiki stance on Ozone, its properties and applications.  With that said, Ozone  should be treated with respect and should not be inhaled.  Prolonged exposure of elevated amounts of ozone will surely harm you.

"March 12, 1975 - FDA recognized ozone treatment to be a Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for the bottled water industry. The minimum ozone treatment for GMP is "0.1 part per million (0.1 mg/l) of ozone in water solution in an enclosed systems for at least 5 minutes." Code 21 of Federal Regulations, Section 129.80 d.4 Federal Register 11566, 12 March 1975

FDA approved Ozone a long time ago for many applications

In the states, OSHA regulates two levels for ozone exposure.  They are 0.10-ppm time weighted average (TWA) for an 8-hour day, and 0.30-ppm for 15 minutes.  In Canada, guidelines vary by province.  The best concentrations for continuous use are in the range of 0.01 - 0.03-ppm, which is well within the guidelines.

"1957 - Ozone in the gaseous form was approved for the storage of meat by the USDA."

Yes.  Coronal discharge units are cheaper and need to be inspected a couple of times per month.  The plates need to be changed regularly.  UV lamp systems, however, just go, go, go.  You only need to clean the tubes once every couple of months (with continuous use) with alcohol and a cloth.  At the end of the day, UV is more expensive, but it's the way to go for operations with 5,000 sq. ft. or less.

Yes, you can set the output grams per hour and the duration.  For example, in a greenhouse maintenance cycle - ozone once per week to nip parasites in the bud - at closing time, say 6pm turn the ozone machine on with the timer set to turn off in 10 hours.  When you come in at 8 am, the ozone has diminished 95%+ (ozone a half life of 30 minutes means that concentration is 1/64), at which point, you safely open the doors and air out the facility to remove the residual ozone.

ozone safety

While ozone is dominating many industrial applications due to its low cost, efficiency, wide scope of application and safety, anyone using ozone commercially should be trained it its use by a professional.  With that said, the concepts and safety procedures are easy to grasp and implement.

  • Don't allow access to the facility while ozonating.   Uninformed, unsuspecting janitors and cleaning ladies can easily enter the premises and be exposed, causing them temporary respirator discomfort or worse.

  • Wear a mask if you have to enter a facility in the process of ozone sanitation.

  • Use a timer that shuts off the machine two or more hours before reentry.

  • Ventilate the area after ozonation with strong fans, and open the windows.

  • Mount the ozone generator centrally but near the entrance of the facility for easy access.

An oscillating fan should be placed near the generator to move the air, a second fan can be used to strategically to circulate the air.

OZONE AT WIKI  Memorize this if you use Ozone

Ozone or trioxygen, is an inorganic molecule with the chemical formula O3. It is a pale blue gas with a distinctively pungent smell. It is an allotrope of oxygen that is much less stable than the diatomic allotrope O2, breaking down in the lower atmosphere to O2 or dioxygen. Ozone is formed from dioxygen by the action of ultraviolet light and also atmospheric electrical discharges, and is present in low concentrations throughout the Earth's atmosphere (stratosphere). In total, ozone makes up only 0.6 ppm of the atmosphere.

Ozone's odour is sharp, reminiscent of chlorine, and detectable by many people at concentrations of as little as 100 ppb in air. Ozone's O3 structure was determined in 1865. The molecule was later proven to have a bent structure and to be diamagnetic. In standard conditions, ozone is a pale blue gas that condenses at progressively cryogenic temperatures to a dark blue liquid and finally a violet-black solid. Ozone's instability with regard to more common dioxygen is such that both concentrated gas and liquid ozone may decompose explosively at elevated temperatures or fast warming to the boiling point.[4] It is therefore used commercially only in low concentrations.....  more...

USDA and FDA Ozone Regulations

Ozone has been given GRAS(Generally Recognized as Safe) approval by the USDA and the FDA for direct contact with food products, including all meat and poultry products. While good manufacturing procedures must be in place, no regulations exist on levels of ozone in food processing applications. The final rule from the FDA providing GRAS approval was given in 2001, the USDA followed with the final rule granting GRAS approval for ozone in 2002. References for all these actions, along with the specific rules are provided below.
