WHY WHOLE PLANT CBD EXTRACTS ARE BEST
Israeli researchers report that CBD extracts made from the whole cannabis plant are far superior to purified synthetic CBD.
Cannabidiol - CBD is a molecule that is found in certain strains of marijuana and hemp. CBD, as you may be aware of, has been found to have a wide scope of medicinal properties. It is non-psychoactive and tends to balance the effects ot THC. THC is the psychoactive component of marijuana that is most abundant in most recreational and medical strains.
Whole plant CBD Oil drops have been found to have a greater absorption rate compared to a raw whole flower extract. CBD oil from hemp does not contain appreciable quantities of THC, which makes it non-stoning or non-psychoactive.
An example of a great non-psychoactive Whole Hemp product consists of CBD/CBDa, with trace quantities of CBC, CBG, CBN with terpenes including Myrcene, Limonene, Alpha & Beta -pinene, Linalool, B-caryophyllene, Caryophyllene oxide, Terpinolene and Humulene.
HOW CBD WORKS
In 1992, a substance named Anandamide was discovered in the brain tissue of mammals. This molecule was found to activate receptors that control many physical and body functions, like perception, mood, nerve impulses and more. Later it was discovered that cannabinoids, the main constituent of cannabis flowers acted in a similar manner as molecules produced naturally in our body. The body's own cannabinoids were thus called endocannabinoids after the plant. Both plant and body cananbinoids affect receptors on the membrane of cells that regulate its activity and how they work in concert with other cells..
“A lot of research effort has focused on isolates (single pure molecules) and to characterize isolated single constituents of traditional herbal medicine in an effort to find a legitimate rationale for their therapeutic use… however, the data together with those of others provide legitimate rationale to introduce a new generation of phytopharmaceuticals... to treat diseases that have hitherto for are treated using synthetic drugs exclusively. The therapeutic synergy observed plant extracts results in the requirement for a lower amount of active components, with consequently a reduction in adverse effects.” - Paraphrase Israeli Researchers Findings
In medicine, researchers like to isolate a variable and then do experiments to clearly establish what it does. While this logic is solid for simple systems, it can fail brutally when things get complex - like in a biological system. Nonetheless, most studies on CBD focus on the isolated, synthetic molecule by removing all the other ingredients found in the plant. Imagine eating an apple, peel, seeds and all as compared to ingesting only the purified citric acid from apples. The effects will be clearly different between whole apple and isolated compound.
CBD ALONE - ISRAELI RESEARCH
When CBD was taken alone, it had a very narrow effective dose range. It was also discovered that as the patient's system adapts to cannabinoid therapy, the cells grow more cannabinoid receptors, and this changes the effective dose, making it a challenge to get a handle on how much CBD works in a given individual within a particular condition. .
‘Healing was only observed when pure CBD was given within a very limited dose range, whereas no beneficial effect achieved at either lower or higher doses. Furthermore, this was a characteristic that ‘imposes serious obstacles that limit its usefulness in a clinical context."
When the response to a drug has a very narrow range, this is called a bell curve response. Researchers wondered if natural sources of CBD had the same bell curve response, the same narrow band width - dosage that was effective.
So, they tested whole plant CBD-rich extract and compared its effects against the single-molecule isolate. Researchers used a high CBD strain they called “Cannatonic” the name taken for its intended use as a “cannabis tonic”. The plant extract contained 17.9% - CBD, 1.1% THC, 1.1% cannabichromene - CBC 0.2% Cannabigerol - CBG and trace cannabidiol - CBDV.
To explore its anti-inflammatory and painkilling effects, the cannatonic whole plant CBD extract was tested on mice. Multiple groups of mice were dosed with several experimental CBD products. Controls were not given any CBD meds, one group was given whole plant extracts of CBD from cannatonic, and a third group was dosed with pure synthetic CBD. The scientists tested for inflammation, pain and tumor marker chemicals, which are used to clinically assess activity, as these substances are inter-connected with numerous disease states including: cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Alzheimer’s and clinical depression.
The researchers were amazed when they saw very different results in the dose response curves - between the synthetic and natural CBD. The natural CBD extract groups displayed a dose dependent pattern with inhibition of pain, inflammation and TNF alpha production, which is to say, the more whole plant CBD they gave the mice, the better the effect, that is, until a very high dose was reached. Thus the narrow range of efficacy of synthetic CBD was over come simply by taking CBD with other ingredients of the whole plant extract.
So, while scientists strived to make things simple and isolate the variables by making pure CBD, they narrowed the dosing window of activity, which makes study and administration more complicated.
The research team explained that the cannatonic extract…provided a clear correlation between the anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive responses and the dose, with increasing responses upon increasing doses, which makes this plant medicine ideal for clinical uses.
In addition, it was surprisingly noted that the CBD was much more potent - required less - in whole plant extracts - to achieve the same painkilling, anti-tumor or anti-inflammatory results.
These differences clearly demonstrated that natural CBD extracts are “superior for the treatment of inflammatory conditions.” The Israeli scientists postulated that this more efficient and therapeutic action of the natural CBD extract - must be due to the combination and cooperation between CBD, and the numerous other components; which are likely to be other phytocannabinoids and terpenoids.
“It is likely that other components in the extract synergize with CBD to achieve the desired anti-inflammatory action - that may contribute to overcoming the narrow-band bell-shaped dose-response of purified CBD.”
Interestingly, both forms of CBD, synthetic and whole plant had superior anti-inflammatory and pain killing action as compared to aspirin. Other research indicates that CBD is effective in treating:
TAKEAWAY - To comply with the above research findings, quality whole plant extracts must be manufactured using the whole plant or the flower (bud) from a strain well endowed with CBD and / or THC, retaining the terpenes and other cannabinoids. Extracts should be lab-tested and verified to be pesticide free. Note that some extraction techniques gas off the terpenes in processing and only retain the CBD and THC. Look for a manufacturer that takes care to collect the important complimentary medicinal components, which are the terpenes.
