"Think about the difference between - downing several shots of moonshine at a seedy bar - as opposed to savoring two glasses of fine wine in a garden at a yoga retreat." -  Metaphor, Street Weed vs Yogini Herb

Combining cannabis with yoga might be controversial for some, but it's definitely not a new thing. Medicine men and Yogis have been smoking special hashish/marijuana preparations for eons.  In fact, In India and Nepal, there are plenty of guru's practicing ancient yoga arts with the inspiration of sacrosanct cannabis.

While moldy pot and chemicals account for most of the toxic effects of marijuana, there is substantial scientific that cannabis abuse, or cannabinoid hypermesis syndrome is a thing.

The mistake most people make is to assume all varieties of marijuana are the same.  There is stoner pot, there is meditative pot, non-psychoactive medicinal herbs, other varieties loaded with terpenes.  The response in body and mind to different varieties of cannabis can be radically different between individuals.  Different fold respond differently to THC, the main psychoactive ingredient found in most American Cannabis. Many strains of marijuana, medicinal and street, are mono-THC, meaning that the many other naturally occurring medicinal and balancing ingredients have been bred out of the plant. While this type (high THC) of cannabis is popular for recreational and medical use, it's definitely not for everyone and probably not the one you want to use in your yoga practice.  The key here is to become more conscious in a good way, not numbly unconscious.

"Marijuana that is very high in THC (15-30%) and devoid of other cannabinoids - is not recommended for use with yoga, nor any other physical activity"

Street marijuana that is usually very high in THC (the psychoactive compound), can get you really stoned, sleepy, happy, stupid, creative or paranoid.  If you are a hyper-responder to THC, it's going to affect you badly if taken "alone" (in mono-THC strains).  However, if the THC comes with certain terpenes and other cannabinoids, they balance the negative effects.  It turns out that the traditional hashish that Yoginis consumed resemble newly developed "elite' medical strains, which feature a balance between the cannabinoids.  Testing of "Yogini" hashish revealed that it is a balanced mixture cannabinoids, with 3-4% THC (d8 - non psychoactive), 4% THC (d9- psychoactive), 3-4 % CBD (non-psychoactive), 2-3 % CBN (non-psychoactive).

“Undisturbed calmness of mind is attained by cultivating friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and indifference toward the wicked.”  - Patañjali, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

As the scientific evidence comes in, scientists are finding that marijuana with CBD (non psychoactive component, bred out of street weed) works better all-round as compared to popular "good-shit" varieties.  Basically, stoner weed and yogini cannabis is like comparing moonshine with a glass of expensive wine.  There is virtually no relationship between the two experiences.  Think about downing several shots of moonshine at a seedy bar as opposed to two glasses of fine wine savored overlooking a garden at a quaint yoga retreat.

What do the different cannabinoids do?  In isolation these medicinal compounds have the following medicinal effects, but the research of Dr. Mechoulam, the discoverer of THC, indicates that THC does not work best in isolation and that there is an entourage effect between cannabinoids, which is much more effective than taking mega-stoner weed or pharmaceutical isolates.

"Entourage effect is a phrase that was introduced in cannabinoid science in 1998 by S. Ben-Shabat, with Raphael Mechoulam, to represent a novel endogenous cannabinoid molecular regulation route. Biological activity assayed together with inactive compounds. References whole plant and whole person caregiver synergy treatments over isolated compound pharmacological dosages." - Wiki

“Life is made up of a collection of moments that are not ours to keep. The pain we encounter throughout our days spent on this earth comes from the illusion that some moments can be held onto. Clinging to people and experiences that were never ours in the first place is what causes us to miss out on the beauty of the miracle that is the now. All of this is yours, yet none of it is. How could it be? Look around you. Everything is fleeting.  To love and let go, love and let go, love and let's the single most important thing we can learn in this lifetime.” - Rachel Brathen

Only disciplines one needs to benefit from a retreat is to be positive and open. Many of us are prone to bad habits that destroy relationships and sabotage the group.  Especially afflicted (but worthy) people are moved to a separate part of the camp, where a life coach focuses on teaching the student - how to see themselves from "the mountain".  Once this technique is mastered, people can change in their core, and the heart overrules self-destructive ways.  Simply put, we get lost and don't know we are going in the wrong direction.
